Counseling by Phone, Secure Chat and Email

With the advent of online  credit card systems, phone, chatroom and email counseling become viable options for those seeking help who would otherwise not have the time or means to engage in what is known as traditional counseling.  Online methods of counseling are less costly than traditional counseling primarily due to lower overhead expenses for the counselor.  This helps to make counseling more readily available to those in need.  Limitations on counseling imposed by insurers have prevented many individuals from obtaining the assistance they require.  The lower cost of online counseling  is partial remedy.

Drawbacks to online counseling do exist.  The absence of direct human contact is sometimes disorienting for clients.  Experience teaches that this is usually only temporary but it is mentioned, here, so that clients are aware of such issue.  Further, the ability/inability and willingness/unwillingness  of a client to express thoughts clearly through electronic media and in appropriate detail has a decided effect on the outcome of any therapeutic relationship between the counselor and client.  Detailed disclosure is essential in getting the best response from a counselor.  Failure to express fully may result in less than optimal response and may not afford clients the insight they truly need to resolve their issues.

I encourage all clients to feel safe and secure in their communications with me.  Our work together is shared with no one without written consent.  I make no judgements about the information clients provide.  Our work together is for the purpose of sorting through the data and exploring ways to make sense of it and make it work for the benefit, rather than the detriment, of you, the client.  In this regard, it is essential that you, as a client, feel free to openly discuss matters of traumatic experience, abuses, sex and sexuality, relationships with others, etc.  You will find that my background is based in a lifelong practice of compassion, concern, and care.

Some of the areas covered in phone, chat, and email counseling are:

About Phone Counseling

Phone counseling is similar to Email counseling in that it is often more convenient and comfortable for some clients.  Phone counseling affords a more personal communication which is often more preferrable as it creates a sense of proximity to the counselor not experienced in emails.  A compassionate, empathetic voice creates a soothing experience which enhances the therapeutic effect of counseling.

About Online Counseling

On-line therapy is a relatively new milieu and has both positive and negative aspects. This form of therapy is not for everyone and should not replace face-to-face therapy especially if you already have a therapist you are working with. However, for many, on-line therapy is just what they need to accommodate a busy lifestyle and receive guidance and support for a variety of problems and issues.

One thing to consider when deciding if on-line therapy is right for you is whether you are able to express yourself clearly and feel comfortable using a computer to exchange information. This is important because all advice and support will be based on this information.

On-line therapy has its advantages. You have the freedom to write freely about sensitive or embarrassing issues. You can engage in therapy in the comfort of your own home and, with the Email Service, at any time of the day or night. It is easily accessible, especially for those who cannot or choose not to leave their home to seek treatment. You will have time to reflect on your writing and the responses given and keep a running journal of our exchanges. It is affordable for those who do not have insurance, have issues that insurance does not cover, or for those who simply cannot make it to regularly-scheduled appointments.  Chat sessions are pre-arranged and only you and the Counselor are present in the realtime Chatroom. With on-line therapy you don't have to wait several weeks for an  appointment, and there is no stigma attached with the idea of walking into a therapist's office. You are in control of your treatment from beginning to end and may engage in sessions as frequently as you would like.

Please note that Email response time is typically 12-48 hours.  Chat time is pre-arranged and specific.

Online Counseling is not intended for individuals who are experiencing  crisis and it is not intended for individuals under the age of 18.  If you are in crisis, feel unsafe, or are actively suicidal, please call your local emergency room, hotline, or 911.
